Day 2: Seth

Open item: Sunflower seed

Ask your child what it is and what it is used for. These have been roasted for eating, but what happens when you plant one in the ground?

25 And Adam knew his wife again, and she bore a son and called his name Seth, for she said, “God has appointed for me another offspring instead of Abel, for Cain killed him.” 26 To Seth also a son was born, and he called his name Enosh. At that time people began to call upon the name of the Lord.

Devotion

Adam and Eve had two sons named Cain and Abel. Cain gave into a sinful and angry heart and killed his brother Abel, and he did not repent.

After Abel died, Eve had a third son named Seth, meaning “appointed.” She knew this son had been ordained (given) by God to take the place of faithful Abel. The birth of Seth provided HOPE, and through his seed the worship of the Lord continued.

Even in the darkest of times, there is always hope. Abel’s murder was a tragedy, but it led to the fulfillment of God’s promise of a Savior. No matter what happens in our lives, we can know that God is in control and His plan will ultimately be accomplished.

Prayer

Final Words

Was Seth someone you’d expect in Jesus’ family tree?

Not really. He was third born and came after a jealous murderer. Seth, however was ordained and a seed of hope for his family.

Cain, and Abel were sinners. Seth was too. They all needed a Savior, and so do we! Jesus is coming!
