Day 6: Noah

Open item: Water dropper

Provide a small container with water so that children can experiment with the water dropper. Invite them to make rain and create a “puddle.”

7 By faith Noah, being warned by God concerning events as yet unseen, in reverent fear constructed an ark for the saving of his household. By this he condemned the world and became an heir of the righteousness that comes by faith.

Devotion

Noah was an ordinary man who lived in a time of great wickedness on the earth. People were disobeying God and living sin-filled lives. The way Noah lived looked different from most others. Noah wasn’t a sinless or perfect man. There was even a time when Noah drank too much wine and was embarrassed in front of his family! However, the Bible tells us he followed God, asking God for forgiveness when he sinned and trying to do what was right in God’s eyes.

God decided to judge the evil people by sending a flood that would fill the whole earth. God showed mercy to Noah and his family by instructing Noah to build a huge boat called an ark. The ark would protect Noah, his family, and two of every animal from the flood waters. Noah obeyed and tried to warn people, but they didn’t believe him or turn away from their sin. They made fun of Noah because they didn’t believe God. Noah was, however, building an ark when the people likely had never even seen rain before. Can you imagine how crazy Noah must have seemed to everyone around him? Do you think you would have believed him?

Eventually, the flood did come, and all that God had told Noah came true. The people outside the ark died in the flood. Noah, his family, and the animals were safe on the ark.

After the flood, Noah worshiped and thanked God for his goodness and protection. God used a regular man for an amazing thing, and Noah got to share in the righteousness that comes by faith.

Final Words

Was Noah someone important to the people who knew him? Nope. They actually thought he was crazy for what he was doing, but God was glorified by Noah’s obedience. An ordinary man who God used in an extraordinary way, but who still needed a Savior just like us. Jesus is coming!
